The sun enters Dhanupan-Hindu

This is a solar marker rather than a lunar one: the sun enters Dhanu, and a month begins that is kept quite differently from those around it. In the temple traditions of the south it opens Dhanurmasa, a month of pre-dawn worship, and in Odisha it opens a season of its own. It is one of the twelve sankrantis and the calendar reckons it exactly as it reckons Makar Sankranti a month later.

Where Dhanurmasa is kept, temples open and worship is offered before sunrise every day for the whole month, with a specific preparation offered each morning. It is one of the few observances measured in a month of early mornings rather than in a single day's effort.

One of the twelve solar sankrantis, falling in the middle of December. Where it is observed the day opens a month with its own character: pre-dawn temple worship every morning through Dhanurmasa in the southern traditions, and in Odisha the start of a season culminating in the Dhanu Yatra enactment at Bargarh. The day itself is kept with a bath, an offering to the sun, and dana. Across the north and west, which is this catalogue's present scope, it passes with little observance, and the reviewer should weigh that before giving it prominence.

Procedure

  1. Bath. The household bathes before sunrise, in a river or tank where one is reachable.
  2. Arghya to the sun. Water is offered to the rising sun, marking the entry into the new solar month.
  3. Dana. Grain, cloth or cash is given, as at the other sankrantis.
  4. The month begun. Where Dhanurmasa is kept, the daily pre-dawn worship begins from this morning and continues for the month.
