One key story says Parvati fashioned Ganesha from her own body and set him to guard her privacy. When Shiva, not recognising the boy, beheaded him in anger, he later replaced the head with that of an elephant and declared Ganesha leader of the ganas. The tale explains his role as remover of obstacles and guardian of thresholds.
