Krishna lifts Govardhanwidely told

When the cowherds of Braj prepared their annual offering to Indra, the young Krishna persuaded them to honour instead Mount Govardhan — the hill that actually fed their cattle and fields. Indra, slighted, unleashed seven days of storm; Krishna lifted Govardhan on the little finger of one hand, sheltering every villager and animal below it until Indra relented. The day celebrates that shelter — gratitude from distant powers to the near, living sources of sustenance.

The first annakut of Brajsome traditions · Hindi Belt

In continuation of the same narrative, the villagers' feast originally meant for Indra was offered to Govardhan itself — dishes piled like a mountain. Temple and household Annakut offerings re-enact that first redirected feast; in Braj, parikrama (circumambulation) of Govardhan hill remains a living practice on this day.

Symbolism & meaning

Meaning
Protection is found in what is near and nurturing rather than in appeasing distant power; the household's abundance (Annakut) is acknowledged as a gift to be offered before it is enjoyed.
Significance
Anchors the day after Deepavali in humility and thanksgiving: the lamps of the night before celebrate prosperity, Govardhan Puja acknowledges where prosperity comes from. In Gujarat the same day opens the new year (Bestu Varas) — a separate occasion sharing the date.
