Janmashtami recalls Krishnas midnight birth to Devaki and Vasudeva in Kamsas prison. Stories describe how Vasudeva carried the child across the Yamuna to Gokul while guards slept and the river parted, so that the god could grow up among cowherds before revealing his power.
