The day for everyone unaccounted forpan-Hindu

Pitru Paksha gives each ancestor the lunar day of their death, and this new moon takes all the rest — those whose date nobody recorded, those who died away from home, those with no one left to offer for them. That is why it is called Sarvapitri, all the ancestors. Families who observe nothing else in the fortnight generally observe this.

The crowwidely told

A portion of the offering is set out for crows before the household eats, and whether one comes is watched. The waiting is a real part of the day — families will hold the meal, and the relief when a bird finally drops down is out of all proportion to the size of the thing being asked.

In Bengal this new moon is not an ending but a beginning: Devi Paksha opens, the season's first invocation is made before dawn, and Durga Puja is from that moment underway. Households there keep the ancestral offering in the morning and turn to the goddess the same day, and neither observance is a version of the other.

Core symbolism
The new moon closing the fortnight of the ancestors — the day for all of them, and particularly for those whose own day is unknown.
Meaning
The new moon at the end of Pitru Paksha. Shraddha is performed for all the household's ancestors together, and above all for those whose date of death is not known — which is why it is the one day of the fortnight most families keep even when they keep no other. Tarpana is offered, pindas are made, food is cooked from what the ancestors are remembered to have liked, and a portion is set out for crows before anyone eats. Brahmins or others are fed and dana is given. In Bengal the same new moon opens the Durga Puja season, which is a separate observance.

Procedure

  1. Bath and sankalpa. The one offering bathes and states the intention, naming the ancestors and the day being kept.
  2. Tarpana. Water with sesame is offered to three generations on both sides, and to those whose names are not known.
  3. The cooked offering. Food is cooked — commonly what the remembered ancestors liked — and offered with pindas.
  4. The crow's portion. A portion is set out for crows before the household eats, and in most families the meal waits for it.
  5. Feeding and dana. Guests are fed and dana is given in the ancestors' name, after which the family eats.
