A pinda is a ball of cooked rice, and what it is for is unusually concrete: the tradition holds that between death and joining the ancestors the dead need a body, and the pindas offered over the days after a death build one. That is why they are offered in sequence and why the count matters — each is understood to make a part.

Many families hold that a pinda offered at Gaya settles the obligation for good, and travel there once for that reason — often years after the death, and often for several generations of ancestors at the same visit. The journey is undertaken as a duty discharged rather than as a pilgrimage of devotion.

Meaning
Balls of cooked rice, with sesame and often barley, are offered over the days following a death, and again at the annual rites. The account given for them is literal: the dead are held to need a body for the interval between the cremation and joining the ancestors, and the pindas make it, one part at a time, which is why they come in a prescribed sequence rather than all at once. After the offering the pindas are given to a river, to crows, or to cattle, and in many families whether the crows come to eat is watched closely and read as an answer.

Procedure

  1. Bath and preparation. The one offering bathes and prepares the place, which is commonly a riverbank rather than the house.
  2. Sankalpa. The intention is stated, naming the deceased, the gotra and the day of the offering.
  3. Making the pindas. Cooked rice is mixed with sesame, and in several traditions barley, and formed into balls on darbha grass.
  4. The offering. The pindas are offered with water and sesame, in the prescribed number for that day of the sequence.
  5. Disposal. The pindas are given to a river, left for crows, or given to cattle, as the family's custom holds.
