The chariot turnspan-Hindu

Ratha Saptami takes its name from the sun's chariot, which is said to turn on this day towards the north. It comes a few weeks after Makar Sankranti has already marked the solar turn, and the two are not rivals: Sankranti marks the sun's entry into Makara, and this day marks the chariot swinging round. The festival is about the vehicle rather than the position.

Leaves on the shoulderswidely told

The bath is the observance most people describe. Arka leaves are placed on the head and on each shoulder and the knees, and water is poured over them at dawn facing the rising sun — seven leaves in most accounts, for the seven horses of the chariot. It is done outdoors where possible, and families who keep nothing else of the day keep this.

Meaning: The seventh day of the bright fortnight of Magha, kept for Surya. The distinctive observance is the bath: before sunrise, arka leaves are placed on the head, shoulders and knees, and water is poured over them facing east. Arghya is then offered to the rising sun, and in many households a preparation of new rice and jaggery is cooked in the open, allowed to boil over, and offered. The day is much more prominent in the south and in Odisha, where major temples hold processions, than in the north, where many families do not mark it at all.

Procedure

Before dawn. The household rises before sunrise and gathers arka leaves, or the substitute a family uses where the plant is unavailable.
The bath. Leaves are placed on the head, each shoulder and the knees, and water is poured over them facing east.
Arghya. Water is offered to the rising sun, in most traditions with a red flower and sandal paste.
The offering cooked outdoors. New rice with jaggery and milk is cooked in the open, allowed to boil over, and offered to the sun.
Prasad. The preparation is shared as prasad, and in many households given to neighbours as well.
