The occasion is exactly what its name says: the elder has seen a thousand full moons. A thousand lunar months comes to roughly eighty years and eight months, which is why the day falls where it does rather than on a round birthday. Families like the reckoning because it counts something the elder actually did — looked up, month after month, a thousand times.

The last of the threewidely told

Sixty, seventy, and then this: the third and rarest of the later-life occasions, and the one fewest families reach. Where the first two ask for the years ahead, this one is more plainly a thanksgiving for the years behind, and it is usually held on a full-moon day so that the thousandth can be seen from the gathering.

Procedure

  1. Choosing the day. A full-moon day is chosen, so that the thousandth moon can be seen from the gathering itself.
  2. Auspicious opening. Ganesha and the family deity are invoked and the household's ancestors are honoured.
  3. Shanti homa. A homa for long life and wellbeing is performed with the elder, or the couple, seated before the fire.
  4. Seeing the moon. The gathering goes out to see the full moon with the elder, which is the act the occasion is named for.
  5. Dana and blessing. Dana is given, the elder blesses the younger generations, and the family eats together.
