The brightest moon of the yearpan-Hindu

Sharad Purnima is held to be the full moon at which the moon is most complete — the monsoon has cleared, the air is dry, and the sky is genuinely at its clearest of the year. The festival is built on simply looking at it, which makes it one of the few observances whose central act needs nothing at all.

Kheer left out overnightwidely told

Kheer is cooked and set out in the moonlight, on a terrace or in a courtyard, and eaten in the morning or late in the night. Households treat it as taking something in rather than putting something out, and the bowl is usually covered with a thin cloth rather than a lid so the light still reaches it.

In the east the night is Kojagari, and the name is a question: who is awake? Lakshmi is said to move through the night asking it, and households stay up, keep the doors open and play through the small hours so that the answer, when she comes, is somebody.

Meaning
The full moon of Ashvina, a fortnight after Navaratri ends. The central act is unusually simple: the moon is looked at. Kheer is cooked and left out in the moonlight, covered with a thin cloth, and eaten late at night or the following morning. In the east the night is Kojagari, kept awake with the doors open for Lakshmi, and in Braj and among Vaishnavas it carries the raas association and its own singing. It is a quiet festival almost everywhere, with no fire, no procession and very little equipment.

Procedure

  1. Cooking the kheer. Kheer is cooked in the evening, in most households with rice, milk and sugar or jaggery.
  2. Setting it out. It is set out on a terrace or in a courtyard under the open moon, covered with a thin cloth rather than a lid.
  3. The moon looked at. The household gathers to look at the moon, which is the observance's central act.
  4. The night. In the eastern tradition the night is kept awake with the doors open, and Lakshmi is worshipped.
  5. Eating the kheer. The kheer is shared late in the night or the following morning.

Materials needed

  • Rice, milk and sugar or jaggery for the kheer
  • A wide vessel and a thin cloth to cover it
  • A lamp
  • Flowers and akshata for the offering
  • An image or picture of Lakshmi, where the eastern observance is kept
