The parting of the hairpan-Hindu

Simantonnayana takes its name from its central act: the mother's hair is parted upward from the forehead. It is one of the few samskaras whose name is simply a description of the gesture performed, which is part of why the gesture has survived even where the rest of the rite has not.

The rite that became the celebrationwidely told

In much of India the samskara now travels with a household celebration — bangles put on the mother's arms, her favourite foods cooked, the women of both families gathered. The older rite sits inside the newer one, and in many families the purohit's part lasts minutes while the gathering lasts the day.

Meaning
Where the two earlier pregnancy rites are private, this one is where the family arrives. The rite proper is short — the parting of the hair, a blessing, sometimes music kept up so the mother hears no harsh sound — but around it has grown the fullest domestic celebration of the pregnancy, with the mother's own family often taking the lead. The emphasis has shifted decisively from the unborn child to the mother, and that shift is the thing most families would recognise as the point of the day.

Procedure

  1. Invocation. Ganesha and the family deity are invoked; the ancestors of both families are acknowledged.
  2. Sankalpa. The intention is stated for a safe delivery and the health of mother and child.
  3. Simanta. The mother's hair is parted upward from the forehead — by the husband in some traditions, by the elder women in others.
  4. Bangles and blessing. Bangles are put on the mother's arms and the women of the household bless her.
  5. The gathering. The household feeds the mother what she has asked for, and the family gathers. The form this takes is strongly regional.

Materials needed

  • Bangles, glass or as the family's custom provides
  • A comb or the porcupine quill some traditions use for the parting
  • Haldi, kumkum, akshata and flowers
  • New clothing for the mother
  • Fruit and sweets for the gathering
