Tarpana is the offering of water to the ancestors, poured from cupped hands with sesame in it. It is the simplest of the ancestral rites and by far the most frequent: no fire, no purohit necessarily, no gathering — a person standing in water at dawn, naming three generations back on both sides, and letting the water run through the fingers.

What distinguishes tarpana from a general remembrance is that the dead are named — father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and the same on the mother's side, each with their gotra. Families who have lost track of the names feel the gap at exactly this moment, which is one reason lineage records were kept at all.

Meaning
Water mixed with sesame is poured from cupped hands, over the fingers, while the ancestors are named to three generations on both sides. It is done facing south, ideally standing in a river or tank, most often at dawn. Unlike the rites that follow a death, tarpana is ongoing: some observe it daily, many on new-moon days, and most families at least during Pitru Paksha. It needs no fire and no gathering, which is why it survives in households that keep little else, and why it is often the first ancestral rite anyone learns.

Procedure

  1. Bath and preparation. The person bathes, ideally in a river or tank, and faces south for the offering.
  2. Sankalpa. The intention is stated, naming one's own gotra and the occasion for the offering.
  3. The offering. Water with sesame is taken in cupped hands and poured out over the fingers, in the direction the tradition prescribes for ancestors.
  4. Naming the ancestors. Three generations are named on the father's side and three on the mother's, each with their gotra.
  5. Closing. A final offering is made for ancestors whose names are not known, and for those with no one left to offer for them.

Materials needed

  • Til — black sesame
  • Water, and a vessel where the offering is not made standing in a river
  • Darbha grass, in the traditions that use it
  • A ring of darbha or gold worn on the finger, where the tradition prescribes it
