The second birthpan-Hindu

Upanayana is described as a second birth — the first from parents, the second from the teacher and the mantra received. The word itself means 'bringing near': the child is brought near a teacher, and the ceremony is the beginning of that relationship rather than a celebration of the child.

Satyakama Jabalawidely told

A boy named Satyakama went to a teacher and, asked for his lineage, said honestly that his mother did not know it. The teacher accepted him on the grounds that only someone truthful could have answered that way, and initiated him. The story is told at Upanayana as the account of what the teacher is actually looking for.

Symbolism & meaning

Core symbolism
Initiation into study and into daily personal observance. The child stops being someone on whose behalf rites are performed and becomes someone who performs them.
Meaning
Every samskara before this one is done for the child by someone else — named, fed, tonsured, all in the passive. Upanayana is the point at which that reverses. The mantra is given directly and privately, the daily observance becomes the initiate's own obligation, and the thread worn afterwards is a standing reminder of it rather than an ornament. The rite is also the formal beginning of brahmacharya, the student stage, which is why the begging bowl and the first alms appear in it: the initiate is, for that moment, a student dependent on the household — and the first alms are given by the mother, so the first thing the new student receives is from the person they are being handed on from.

Procedure

  1. Auspicious opening. Ganesha is invoked, the space is purified, and the family's ancestors are honoured before the rite begins.
  2. Last meal with the mother. The initiate eats with his mother for the last time as a child of the household in the old sense. Observed in many communities, and often the part families remember most.
  3. Tonsure and bath. The head is shaved, wholly or in part, and the initiate bathes and is dressed in new unstitched cloth.
  4. Kaupina and mekhala. The initiate is given the loincloth and the girdle of the student.
  5. Yajnopavita. The sacred thread is placed over the left shoulder. Its three strands are read variously by different traditions — as three debts, or three obligations.
  6. Danda. The staff is given, marking the initiate as a student.
  7. Agni karya. The initiate makes his first offerings into the fire himself, having only watched them made until now.
  8. Gayatri upadesha. The Gayatri mantra is given, spoken privately by the father or the acharya, usually under a cloth held over both. This is the centre of the rite.
  9. Bhiksha. The initiate begs his first alms. His mother gives first, then the other women of the household and the assembled relatives.
  10. Ashirvada. The elders bless the initiate and the rite closes.

  • Yajnopavita — the sacred thread

  • Homa kunda, firewood, ghee and havan samagri
  • A cloth to be held over father and son for the Gayatri upadesha
