The day that does not diminishpan-Hindu

Akshaya means undiminishing, and the claim attached to the tithi is that what is begun or given on it does not run out. That is why it is chosen for starting things — a business, a building, a study — and why giving is emphasised as much as acquiring: the logic applies to what leaves the house as much as to what enters it.

Sudama's handful of ricewidely told

Sudama went to Krishna with nothing but a small twist of beaten rice, embarrassed to offer it, and Krishna ate it and returned him more than he could hold. The story is told on this day for what it says about proportion — the gift was negligible and the return was not — and it is the narrative most often given when the day's emphasis on giving is explained.

Doors that open on this daysome traditions

Several major temple doors open for the season on this tithi, Badrinath among them, and for pilgrims the day is the start of the year's journey rather than a domestic observance at all. In the Himalayan circuit it is the practical beginning of everything.

The undiminishing third — a day on which what is begun or given is held not to run out.
Meaning
The third day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, regarded as auspicious without needing any further calculation, which is why weddings, house-warmings and new ventures are set on it in large numbers. The traditional emphasis is double: begin things, and give things. Dana is central — grain, water, cloth, fans and vessels against the coming heat — and in much of the country the day is also when water pots are set out publicly for travellers. Buying gold has become the most visible modern practice and is a recent commercial layer rather than the day's original content.

Procedure

  1. Bath and sankalpa. The household bathes early and states the intention for whatever is being begun or given on the day.
  2. Puja. Vishnu and Lakshmi are worshipped together in most traditions, with the family deity alongside.
  3. Dana. Grain, water, cloth, vessels and fans are given — the seasonal emphasis is on relief from the coming heat.
  4. Beginning something. Ventures, journeys, building work and study are begun on the day, and weddings are commonly set on it.
  5. Water set out. In many places water pots are set out publicly for travellers, which is the day's most characteristic act of giving.
