The spring nine nightspan-Hindu

Chaitra Navratri opens the lunar year in most reckonings and runs nine nights for the Devi, ending on the ninth with Rama Navami. It is the quieter of the two Navratris — kept largely at home, with fasting and daily recitation, where the autumn one fills streets. Families who observe both describe this one as the discipline and the other as the celebration.

Barley sown in a potwidely told

On the first day many households sow barley in an earthen pot of soil, keep it beside the Devi's place through the nine days, and watch it come up. On the ninth the shoots are cut and given out. What the sprouting is read for varies; that it is watched is consistent.

Meaning
Nine nights beginning on the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, which in most reckonings is the start of the lunar year. On the first day a pot is installed and barley sown beside it, and through the nine days the household fasts to whatever degree it keeps, recites daily, and lights a lamp that is not allowed to go out. The ninth day is Rama Navami. Compared with the autumn Navaratri this one is domestic — no pandals, no public images in most of the country — and it is the observance rather than the gathering that families describe.

Procedure

  1. Ghatasthapana. On the first day a pot is installed at the Devi's place, and barley is sown in soil beside it.
  2. The lamp. A lamp is lit and kept burning through the nine days without being allowed to go out.
  3. Daily observance. Each day the household recites, offers flowers and prasad, and keeps whatever fast it observes.
  4. Ashtami or Navami puja. On the eighth or ninth day the fuller puja is performed, and in many families young girls are invited, fed and given gifts.
  5. Closing. The barley shoots are cut and distributed, and the fast is broken. The ninth day is Rama Navami.

Materials needed

  • An earthen pot, soil and barley seed
  • A lamp with oil or ghee to burn nine days
  • An image or picture of the Devi
  • Red cloth, bangles and the offerings for the kanya puja
  • Flowers, coconut, fruit and akshata
  • Fasting foods, as the household's practice provides
