Karva Chauth is kept from before dawn until the moon appears, without food and in the stricter observance without water. What makes it distinctive is the ending: the fast does not break at a time but at a sighting, so the whole day is spent waiting on the sky, and a cloudy evening is a genuine ordeal that people remember for years.

When the moon rises it is looked at through a sieve, and then the husband is looked at through the same sieve, and he gives the first sip of water. The gesture is small and entirely fixed — it is the image everyone has of this festival — and it is why the sieve, of all things, is the one object a household must not have mislaid.

Meaning
The fourth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika. The fast begins before dawn, after sargi — a meal sent by the husband's mother and eaten in the dark — and runs without food, and in the stricter form without water, until the moon rises. Through the afternoon the women of the neighbourhood gather, dressed as at a wedding, pass their karvas round in a circle and hear the story of the fast. At moonrise the moon is seen through a sieve, then the husband through the same sieve, and he gives the first sip of water. It is a festival of the northwest and the Hindi belt.

Procedure

  1. Sargi before dawn. A meal sent by the husband's mother is eaten before first light, after which the fast begins.
  2. Dressing. Those keeping the fast dress as for a wedding, and henna is commonly applied the evening before.
  3. The afternoon gathering. The women of the neighbourhood gather, pass their karvas round in a circle, and the story of the fast is read or told.
  4. Waiting for the moon. The fast continues until the moon is sighted, which in most households is watched for from a terrace or the street.
  5. Breaking the fast. The moon is seen through a sieve, then the husband through the same sieve, and he gives the first sip of water.
