Birth in the prison cellBhagavata narrative

Janmashtami recalls Krishnas midnight birth to Devaki and Vasudeva in Kamsas prison. Stories describe how Vasudeva carried the child across the Yamuna to Gokul while guards slept and the river parted, so that the god could grow up among cowherds before revealing his power.

Symbolism & meaning

Core symbolism: Janmashtami symbolises divine presence entering the hardest circumstances and finding shelter among ordinary people.
Meaning: The prison and secret journey highlight that hope can arise in places of confinement and fear, and that care from humble guardians is central to the unfolding of larger purposes. Fasting and night vigil echo that watchfulness.

Procedure
