Dulla Bhatti saves the daughtersPunjabi oral tradition

Many Punjabis tell Lohri through the legend of Dulla Bhatti, a rebel in Mughal-era Punjab who protected villagers from unjust taxation and rescued girls from forced abductions. One story describes him arranging the marriages of two such girls, giving them away like a father and lighting a bonfire to bless their new lives. Songs around Lohri fires recall Dulla’s courage and mock oppressors, so the circle of warmth becomes a remembrance of resistance, protection and dignity.

Lohri falls in mid-January at the turn of winter, close to the rabi crop’s ripening and Makar Sankranti. Families gather around a bonfire with sugarcane, jaggery, sesame, peanuts and maize, offering handfuls into the fire before sharing them as prasad. The flames carry prayers for warmth, health and a good harvest; the sweet offerings express gratitude for the land and invite abundance to be enjoyed together.
