Nag Panchami falls in the monsoon, which is when snakes are driven out of flooded ground and into the places people are. The festival's timing is the whole explanation for it: this is the season of encounter, and the tradition responds by making an offering rather than a hunt. Milk is set at an anthill or a stone naga, and the household asks not to be harmed.

The ones drawn on the doorwidely told

In many households the offering is made to nagas drawn on the door or wall in rice paste or turmeric, or to clay figures made for the day and given to water afterwards. Where a stone naga stands under a tree in the locality, that is where the neighbourhood goes. It is a festival with almost no temple in it.

Meaning
The fifth day of the bright fortnight of Shravana. Milk, water and flowers are offered to nagas — most commonly to a stone naga under a tree, an anthill, a clay figure made for the day, or an image drawn on the doorframe in rice paste. Many households avoid digging or ploughing on the day for the same reason the festival exists: the monsoon has driven snakes into the ground people work. Sisters in several traditions offer on behalf of their brothers' safety, and the day is widely kept without any temple involvement at all.

Procedure

  1. Bath and preparation. The household bathes early and prepares the offering of milk, water and flowers.
  2. The naga made or found. A naga is drawn on the doorframe in rice paste or turmeric, or modelled in clay, or the locality's stone naga or anthill is visited.
  3. The offering. Milk, water, flowers and puffed rice are offered, and a lamp is lit before the image.
  4. The day's abstentions. Digging and ploughing are avoided, and in many households frying and cutting are avoided as well.
  5. Closing. Clay figures made for the day are given to water, and prasad is shared.
