The story turns entirely on a loophole. Hiranyakashipu could not be killed by man or beast, indoors or out, by day or night, on the ground or above it. Narasimha is neither man nor lion, appears on a threshold at twilight, and holds him on his lap. Every condition is met and none is broken, which is why the story is told as an argument rather than a battle.

Why it is kept at duskwidely told

The appearance is placed at sandhya — the join between day and night, belonging to neither — and the observance follows it. The fast is kept through the day and the puja is performed at dusk rather than in the morning, which makes this one of the few festivals whose timing is set by the story's own logic.

Meaning
The fourteenth day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, kept chiefly in Vaishnava households and at temples. The distinguishing feature is the hour: the fast runs through the day and the puja is performed at dusk, because that is when the appearance is placed. Cooling offerings suit the season — panakam, sweetened water, buttermilk, watermelon — and are made in quantity and given out. The narrative is read or heard during the day, and the fast is broken after the evening observance.

Procedure

  1. Bath and sankalpa. The household bathes early and states the intention to keep the day's fast until dusk.
  2. The fast and the reading. The fast is kept through the day, and the narrative is read or heard at home or at a temple.
  3. Cooling offerings prepared. Panakam, buttermilk and seasonal fruit are prepared for the evening offering.
  4. Twilight puja. The puja is performed at dusk rather than in the morning, following the hour of the appearance.
  5. Distribution. The cooling preparations are given out to those who have gathered, and the fast is broken.
