The king who comes backpan-Hindu

Mahabali ruled Kerala so well that the story says there was no want and no deceit in it, and he was sent below the earth — permitted to return once a year to see his people. Onam is that visit. The whole festival is a household making sure that what he finds is a place doing well, which is why the effort goes into the floor, the meal and the clothes rather than into a temple.

The floor and the mealpan-Hindu

For ten days a pookkalam is laid on the floor in flowers, growing larger each morning, and on Thiruvonam the sadya is served on a banana leaf — a long sequence of dishes in a set order, eaten with the hands. Both are made rather than bought, and both are what people describe when asked what Onam is.

Meaning
Kerala's harvest festival, reckoned by the Malayalam calendar and falling in Chingam, around August or September. It runs ten days from Atham to Thiruvonam. A pookkalam of fresh flowers is laid on the floor each morning and grows through the ten days; new clothes are given; and on the final day the sadya is served on a banana leaf, a fixed sequence of dishes eaten with the hands. Boat races, swings and games belong to the same days. It is kept by Malayalis of every religion, which is worth stating plainly, and it sits outside this catalogue's present regional scope.

Procedure

  1. Atham — the first pookkalam. On the first of the ten days a small circle of flowers is laid on the swept floor at the entrance.
  2. The ten days. The pookkalam is laid fresh each morning and grows larger and more elaborate as the days go on.
  3. Onakkodi. New clothes are given within the household and to those who work for it, before Thiruvonam.
  4. Thiruvonam. On the final day the household bathes early, the largest pookkalam is laid, and Mahabali is welcomed.
  5. The sadya. The feast is served on a banana leaf in its set order and eaten with the hands, with the family and guests together.
