Symbolism & meaning

Meaning
Symbolizes relationships sealed by a promise. Simple act of knotting a thread becomes a public sign of care and responsibility. The rite teaches that bonds of affection also lend concrete support when needed.

Procedure

  1. Sisters prepare rakhri threads, thali with diya, sweets and tilak early in the day
  2. Brothers visit sisters or host them, sitting facing them for tying
  3. Sisters apply tilak, tie rakhri on brother's wrist and offer sweets
  4. Brothers touch sister's feet, seek good wishes, give gifts and promise to protect and support
  5. Family shares a meal, snacks or tea together

  • Thali with diya, rice, kumkum or sandal paste

  • Gifts or cash envelopes
