Two new years, a fortnight apartpan-Hindu

Much of India starts its year in the spring, and does so twice. The lunar reckoning puts it at the first day of Chaitra's bright fortnight — Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi in the Deccan, Cheti Chand for Sindhis, Navreh in Kashmir. The solar reckoning puts it at the sun's entry into Mesha in mid-April — Vaisakhi, Poila Boishakh, Bohag Bihu, Vishu. Both are ordinary; which one a family keeps depends on where they are from.

The first taste of the yearwidely told

Several of these new years open with a preparation deliberately made of more than one taste — bitter with sweet, sour with sharp — eaten first thing. The reading given is the same wherever it is done: the year will hold all of them, and the household agrees to that at the outset rather than hoping otherwise.

Meaning
The turn of the year, marked across most of the country in spring and on two different dates depending on whether a region reckons by the moon or the sun. What is common is the shape of the day rather than its content: the house cleaned and the threshold marked before dawn, an oil bath, new clothes, the year's almanac read aloud so the household knows what is coming, and a first food that is deliberately not all sweet. What is not common is anything more specific — the gudi raised in Maharashtra, the vishukkani arranged to be seen on waking in Kerala, the Bihu of Assam are different observances and belong to their own communities.

Procedure

  1. Cleaning and the threshold. The house is cleaned in the preceding days and the threshold marked with rangoli and mango or neem leaves.
  2. Oil bath. The household bathes with oil before dawn and dresses in new clothes.
  3. The household observance. The family deity is worshipped and the first observance of the year is made. Its form differs entirely by region.
  4. Reading the year. The new almanac is read aloud, traditionally by an elder or the family purohit, so the household knows the year's markers.
  5. The first food. The preparation of mixed tastes is eaten first, followed by the festival meal.
