Lakshmi who grants the boonpan-Hindu

Varalakshmi is Lakshmi in the form that grants what is asked, and the vrat is addressed to her directly. It is kept on the Friday before the full moon of Shravana, and the day is chosen for the goddess rather than for any event — there is no narrative of something that happened on this date, which is unusual among festivals and gives the observance its plain, transactional character.

A pot made into a goddesswidely told

The image worshipped is made rather than bought: a kalasha filled with rice or water, its mouth closed with a coconut and mango leaves, then given a face, ornaments and a saree until it is the goddess seated in the house. Families keep the same face and jewellery for decades, and the assembling of it the night before is much of the occasion.

Meaning
Kept on the Friday preceding the full moon of Shravana. The household assembles a kalasha — filled with rice or water, closed with a coconut and mango leaves, then given a face, ornaments and a saree — and worships it as Varalakshmi through the day. A thread is tied on the wrist, married women of the neighbourhood are invited and given tamboolam to take away, and a fast is kept until the puja is complete. Procedure

  1. The night before. The house is cleaned, the threshold marked with rangoli, and the kalasha and the goddess's ornaments are prepared.
  2. Assembling the kalasha. The pot is filled with rice or water, closed with a coconut and mango leaves, and dressed with a face, ornaments and a saree.
  3. The puja. The goddess is worshipped with flowers, fruit and the prepared offerings, with the day's narrative read or heard.
  4. The thread. A thread is consecrated in the puja and tied on the wrist of the women keeping the vrat.
  5. Tamboolam and breaking the fast. Married women of the neighbourhood are invited and given tamboolam to take home, and the fast is broken.
