Vasant Panchami is spring announced rather than spring arrived — it falls while much of the north is still cold, and the declaration is made in colour. Mustard is in flower across the fields, and households wear yellow to match it. The tradition sets the season by the calendar and lets the weather catch up, which is why the day feels like an act of confidence.

Saraswati given the daypan-Hindu

The festival belongs to Saraswati, and what is offered to her is what she governs: instruments are placed before her and not played, books and pens are set down and not used, and in many households nobody studies. The day honours learning by suspending it, which children discover early and appreciate for the rest of their lives.

Meaning
The fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha, when the tradition declares spring open. It is Saraswati's day, and the characteristic act is a reversal: books, pens and instruments are placed before her image and deliberately not used, so that the things learning is done with rest. Households wear yellow, cook yellow rice or sweets, and in much of the east the day is a full public puja with images and pandals. Where it is kept quietly it is still recognisable by the colour, which is the part that travels furthest.

Procedure

  1. Yellow. The household bathes and dresses in yellow, and yellow flowers — marigold and mustard — are gathered for the offering.
  2. Setting up. An image or picture of Saraswati is installed and decorated, with a lamp lit before it.
  3. Books and instruments placed. Books, pens, and musical instruments are placed before her and left unused for the day.
  4. The puja. Flowers, yellow rice or sweets, and fruit are offered, and the family's students bow before the image.
  5. Prasad. Prasad is shared, and in many households the day's sweets are made specifically in yellow.

  • Yellow flowers — marigold, and mustard blossom where it is in season
