Stories & history

The one who made the thingspan-Hindu

Vishwakarma is the maker — of the gods' weapons, their chariots, their cities. The day belongs to whoever works with tools, and what is worshipped is not an image so much as the equipment itself: lathes, looms, presses, vehicles, laid out and garlanded. It is the festival at which a workshop is the temple.

The day the machines restBengali · Odia · Hindi Belt

Work stops. Machines are cleaned, oiled and decorated the evening before, and on the day nothing runs — in the industrial belts of the east whole factories close, and the people who use the tools eat together in front of them. Families whose living comes from a vehicle or a machine keep it whether or not their neighbours do.

Symbolism & meaning

Core symbolism
The maker of the gods' works honoured through the tools themselves — machines cleaned, garlanded and left idle for the day.
Meaning
Kept on the sun's entry into Kanya, usually 17 September. The observance takes place where the work is done: machines, vehicles, looms and tools are cleaned and oiled the evening before, garlanded and marked with sandal paste and vermilion on the day, and then left alone. An image of Vishwakarma is installed in the workshop or yard, a puja is performed with everyone who works there present, and prasad and a meal are shared in front of the idle equipment. In parts of the east the day is also marked with kite flying in the afternoon.

Procedure

  1. Cleaning the tools. On the evening before, machines, vehicles and tools are cleaned, oiled and repaired where needed.
  2. Installing the image. An image or picture of Vishwakarma is installed in the workshop, yard or shop floor and decorated.
  3. Marking the equipment. Sandal paste and vermilion are applied to the tools and machines, and garlands are hung on them.
  4. The puja. The puja is performed with everyone who works there present, and the equipment is left idle for the day.
  5. The shared meal. Prasad and a meal are shared at the workplace, in front of the machines that have been stopped.
