Krishna lifts Govardhanwidely told
When the cowherds of Braj prepared their annual offering to Indra, the young Krishna persuaded them to honour instead Mount Govardhan — the hill that actually fed their cattle and fields. Indra, slighted, unleashed seven days of storm; Krishna lifted Govardhan on the little finger of one hand, sheltering every villager and animal below it until Indra relented. The day celebrates that shelter — gratitude from distant powers to the near, living sources of sustenance.
