Nishkramana is the child's first deliberate journey outside the house. The tradition treats the threshold as worth marking: until now the child has been kept in, and this is the household presenting the child to the world and to whatever it holds in regard — the sun, the temple, the river.

Meaning
A small rite with a clear act: the child, who has been kept indoors, is carried out. Where to is the part that differs — to the family temple in many households, to see the rising sun in others, and in some to be shown the moon. It is usually the first time the wider neighbourhood sees the child, and in practice that is much of the point. The rite is brief and the outing is the substance of it. Families commonly time it to an auspicious day rather than to the child's exact age.

Procedure

  1. Invocation at home. The family deity is invoked and the child is dressed for the outing.
  2. The threshold. The child is carried across the threshold, in most traditions by the father or a grandparent.
  3. The showing. The child is taken to the temple, or shown the sun or the moon, as the family's custom holds.
  4. Return and blessing. The household receives the child back and the elders bless the child.

Materials needed

  • New clothing for the child
  • Kajal, and the mark against the evil eye that most families apply
  • Flowers, fruit and offerings for the temple
  • Akshata and kumkum

Family participation

  • Carries the child out for the first time — Father, or a grandparent
  • Prepares and accompanies the child — Mother
  • Receive the child back and bless — Elders of the household
