After first menstruation

Stories & history

A passage marked, or deliberately notwidely told

Ritu Kala Samskara marks a girl's first menstruation. Where it is observed it is one of the warmest occasions in the sequence — the women of the family gathered, new clothes, sweets, gifts — and where it is not observed, that is usually a considered decision rather than neglect. It is the samskara on which families most visibly disagree with each other, and both sides tend to feel strongly.

Symbolism & meaning

Core symbolism
A girl's first menstruation marked — where a family chooses to mark it.
Meaning
Observed, the rite is a women's occasion: the girl is bathed and dressed in new clothes, often her first saree or half-saree, the women of the family and the neighbourhood gather, sweets and oil-rich foods are made for her, and gifts are given by the mother's side. It is held some days after the event, on a day chosen as auspicious. Not observed, nothing is held at all, and in a great many households across the north that is simply the norm rather than a decision anyone discusses. Both are ordinary, and a family should not read either as the standard.

Procedure

  1. Choosing the day. A day is chosen some time after the event, so that the occasion is not held immediately.
  2. The ritual bath. The girl is bathed by the women of the family, usually with turmeric and oil.
  3. New clothes. She is dressed in new clothing — in many traditions her first saree or half-saree, gifted by the mother's family.
  4. Blessing and gifts. The women of the family and the neighbourhood bless her, and gifts are given, chiefly by the mother's side.
  5. The meal. Sweets and oil-rich preparations made for the occasion are shared with those who have gathered.
