Tehravi closes the intense mourning that begins at the death. Until it, a household is in a suspended state — cooking restricted in many families, the kitchen sometimes not used at all, visitors coming to sit rather than to be hosted. The rite ends that, and what most families remember is the ordinariness resuming: the stove lit properly, the house cleaned, people eating together.

Fed by the neighbours until thenwidely told

For the days between the death and this one, food commonly comes from outside — neighbours and the extended family cooking and sending it in, because the bereaved household is not expected to cook for itself. The meal on the day is in part the household taking that back.

Meaning
Held on the thirteenth day in much of the north, and on the eleventh, twelfth or sixteenth in other traditions, this is the occasion that ends the first and heaviest period of mourning. A homa or a shraddha is performed, the deceased is offered for the last time in that sequence, dana is given, and the family and those who supported them eat together — often the first proper meal cooked in that kitchen since the death. Families differ greatly on scale: some hold a large feast, others keep it deliberately small and give the cost away instead.

Procedure

  1. Cleaning and purification. The house is cleaned and purified, and in many families the kitchen is used properly for the first time since the death.
  2. Sankalpa. The intention is stated, naming the deceased and the day being observed.
  3. The shraddha. The shraddha or homa for the day is performed, with the offerings the tradition prescribes for it.
  4. Dana. Cloth, grain, vessels or cash are given to the purohit and to those in need, in the deceased's name.
  5. The meal. The family and those who supported them through the mourning eat together. Scale differs greatly between communities.
