The first letterspan-Hindu

Vidyarambha is the beginning of learning: an adult holds the child's finger and writes the first letters, most often in a tray of rice. The child cannot yet read them, which is understood — the rite marks the household's decision that learning has begun, and the writing is done with the child's hand rather than by the child.

Honey on the tonguesome traditions

In several traditions the first letter is also written on the child's tongue in honey with a gold ring or a blade of grass, so that the beginning of learning is tasted as sweet. Where it is done it is the part families describe first.

Meaning
The child is seated, usually facing east, before an image of Saraswati or Ganapati, and an adult takes the child's finger and traces the first letters in a tray of rice. In many families the adult is the father or a grandparent; in others it is deliberately a teacher, and in Kerala it is famously anyone respected for their learning, with strangers queueing to write with children's fingers on Vijayadashami morning. The rite is short. What varies is how public it is: a household moment in most of the country, a civic occasion in the south.

Procedure

  1. Invocation. Saraswati, or Ganapati, is invoked; the child is bathed and seated facing east.
  2. The rice tray. A tray of rice is spread on a plate or thali and set before the seated child.
  3. The first letters. An adult holds the child's finger and traces the first letters in the rice.
  4. Honey on the tongue. In some traditions a letter is written on the child's tongue in honey with a gold ring. Not universal.
  5. Blessing. The child bows to the one who wrote with them, and to the elders.

Materials needed

  • A tray of rice
  • An image of Saraswati or Ganapati
  • A slate and chalk, where used
  • Honey and a gold ring, in the traditions that use them
